What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapeutic approach that focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. A fundamental aspect of cognitive-behavioral therapy is that our thoughts impact how we feel and act; thus by changing our mindset we can transform feelings into different directions.Cognitive Therapy (CT) was developed by Aaron T. Beck around the same time when Ellis was developing REBT. They were unaware of the other’s work and independently devised their ways. REBT was formed by Ellis on philosophical tenets, whereas Beck's CT relied on research evidence. It emphasizes education and prevention but employs certain techniques specific to distinct problems. The specificity of CT allows therapists to associate assessment, conceptualization, and treatment plans.
Beck designed a therapy for depression based on evidence, and he used empirical studies to test each of his theoretical constructs and conducted controlled outcome studies that compared the results of cognitive therapy with other existing treatments for depression such as psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. This approach was eventually adopted around the world. The application of evidence-supported the application of cognitive therapy to many disorders like depression, panic disorder, social anxiety, phobias, posttraumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, and other psychotic disorders, such as hypochondriasis, body dysmorphic disorder, eating disorders, insomnia, anger issues, stress, and chronic pain and fatigue, as well as distress due to medical problems such as cancer and chronic conditions.
